(Technology)Mass Killers Admissions Reignite Video Game Debate
Scientists dont know for sure whether violent video games make us more violent.
When Anders Breivik, the man responsible for murdering 77 people in Norway last year, announced that he took a year out to play violent video games, the debate over the influence video games have on us was officially reopened. In his trial last week, Breivik said he played Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 to practice his shooting and often spent as many as 16 hours a day on World of Warcraft.
It has long been suggested by some observers that there is a connection between violent games and aggressive behavior, and Breiviks revelations appear to make such views more credible. Gamers and a large number of columnists have reacted with frustration to these sentiments, though. In an article for Forbes, Paul Tassi referred to the debate over violent games, saying: How many times are we going to do this? He later added: Really now, its getting absurd.
The problem for the gamers is that although no link between violence and violent games has been found, scientific tests have not been able to completely disprove the theory. A 2004 US government study on school attackers actually found that over half of the attackers demonstrated some interest in violence, through movies, video games, books and other media.
